If you’ve got an upcoming trip or vacation planned, you’re probably looking forward to getting away from it all and enjoying yourself—but what you shouldn’t be worrying about is your Invisalign treatment! And since it’s very important to wear your aligners often enough and keep tabs on them, you might feel like it’s going to be pretty difficult to do so while you’re on vacation. Fortunately, your dentist is here to help with these four useful tips that’ll let you enjoy your trip without compromising your treatment.
Tip #1. Pack the Essentials
Be sure that you’re taking absolutely everything that you need with you on your trip: a jacket, the right pair of shoes, and of course, all your oral hygiene products and Invisalign equipment! Your toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, mouthwash, aligner case, and next set of trays all need to be in your bag—preferably your carry-on!
Tip #2. Maintain Your Hygiene Routine
Just because you’re going on vacation does not mean that you should be taking a vacation from your oral hygiene routine! You need to continue to brush your teeth after every meal as mandated by your Invisalign guidelines, and you also need to ensure that you’re flossing and rinsing as usual too. It’s pretty easy to neglect your 22-hour mandatory wear time if you’re on vacation, too, so ensure that you’re being diligent about wearing your trays!
Tip #3. Be Mindful of Tap Water
Even though tap water is normally very beneficial for your oral health (due to the addition of fluoride, a naturally occurring mineral that benefits your enamel), you should double-check that the water supply of your destination is okay to drink or use for brushing your teeth—you wouldn’t want to get sick! If you’re ever in doubt, use bottled water instead.
Tip #4. Let Your Orthodontist Know
It’s in your best interest to schedule a visit with your orthodontist before you head out for your trip; one last checkup can ensure that your treatment plan stays on track while you’re away. This will allow your provider to make any adjustments to your timeline (if necessary), but more importantly, it’ll give you the peace of mind to allow you to enjoy your trip while your treatment progresses as normal!
By following these tips, you can rest assured that your travel plans will not impact your Invisalign treatment at all! This means that no matter where your destination is, you’ll still be actively working towards a straighter and healthier smile while enjoying your time away!
