Some might say that “curiosity killed the cat”, but you would be quick to reply, “and satisfaction brought him back”. Invisalign clear aligners are certainly a curiosity, and you’re looking to satisfy the itch in your brain by filling in some pesky knowledge gaps. You’ve come to the right place to get started! Here are the answers to five common questions about Invisalign clear aligners.
#1. Is There a Trick to Removing Invisalign Trays?
You might have heard that Invisalign trays can be surprisingly difficult to pry off your teeth. Indeed, the snug fit can be trickier to work with than other retainer-like devices you might be used to. If squeezing one or both sides of your tray, right around your back molars, doesn’t work, you can purchase an Invisalign removal tool. The official, Invisalign-provided ones are the safest way to remove stubborn aligners.
#2. Will I Experience Chafing or Sores?
Invisalign is designed for convenience and comfort. Most patients don’t experience the chafing, sores, poking, or prodding often associated with traditional wires and brackets. But it can happen, in which case you should have your dentist take a look at the fit. In the meantime, a little orthodontic wax goes a long way.
#3. What Happens if I Break or Tear a Tray?
Damaged aligner trays are always cause for contacting your dentist. Don’t re-insert your tray unless your dentist says it’s okay, and never move on to the next set early without their permission, even if you have it prepped and ready to go! You could end up doing more harm than good that way.
#4. Will I Still Be Able to Drink My Morning Coffee?
Technically, removing your Invisalign aligners and enjoying a morning brew won’t damage them. However, they could become stained and yellow, in which case they won’t appear very clear. You see, the strong pigments in dark beverages like tea, coffee, juice, and wine cling to your teeth, and will get pressed against your trays when you re-insert them. Rinsing your mouth after finishing your cup-of-Joe can help mitigate this, but it’s probably best to limit your dark beverage consumption if you want transparent trays.
#5. Is It Possible for My Treatment to Reverse?
Yes! This is why it’s so important to consult your dentist before advancing to a tighter set or deciding to stick with a current one for a bit longer. It’s also why you need to wear your trays for 20 – 22 hours per day. Failure to wear your Invisalign aligners as instructed could prolong your treatment time at best and cause your teeth to slide back into their misaligned positions at worst!
Hopefully this list addressed most of your Invisalign questions. However, if your cat-like curiosity has yet to be satisfied, remember that your dentist is just a phone-call away. They’d be happy to arrange a consultation and get into all the juicy details!
